What the Parable of the Car Can Teach Us
I have always loved cars—really nice cars. It didn’t matter what kind as long as it was a high-end make and model. It probably comes from my father. He grew up with very little and always wanted the finer things in life. So when he was able to afford it, he started buying those items that put a smile on his face. Our home always had nice vehicles in the garage, and so I guess looking back on my childhood, I knew what made a high-end vehicle worth the money and why someone would be willing to pay more to get it.
You know what it’s like to have a dream care in mind. What if you went to buy your own dream car today? You might walk into the dealership and see it in the showroom—the exact make and model you’ve scrimped and saved for. In fact, it’s the very color you want! You slide into the driver’s seat and wrap your hands around the steering wheel. Everything is perfect. Better than in your dreams. So that’s it; you get out and tell the salesperson that you want it right now. Cash. You pay, the salesperson hands you your keys, and with a smile you may never get rid of you put the key into the ignition and turn it.
Nothing happens.
You try again. Same result. You’re heart sinks. “What’s the matter with it?” you ask the salesperson. “Well,” the salesperson replies, “it doesn’t have an engine.”
What does this story about a glitzy car with no engine have to do with dietary supplements and personal care products? A lot. Too often, many of the supplements and products that are on the market today are fancy cars with no engines. They have beautiful packaging, marketing, and hype that make them look high-end. But once you buy and try, you find that they have no engine—no health-supporting ingredients in them, or not enough to really do anything beneficial for your body.
If you buy something, you want it to work. You would never recommend a product to a friend, family member, or acquaintance if you tried it and it didn’t work.
